  • Blackberry’s new departure: Research In Motion announced BlackBerry’s new OS in their New York press conference yesterday: “BlackBerry 6 is the outcome of RIM’s ongoing passion to deliver a powerful, simplified and optimized user experience for both touch screen and keyboard fans” says Mike Lazaridis, R.I.M’s CEO BlackBerry 6 -  http://bit.ly/cuZE5p

  • Europe first for Windows Mobile 7: Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner announced this week that Windows Mobile will be available in Europe in October, followed by the US in November – http://bit.ly/ablZIB
  • Nokia’s market share: A Canalys’ study shows that Nokia is still leading the smartphone market in 2010 Q2 with 38% of market share but that Android is close to the Finnish manufacturer as Google’s OS based phones shipment rose by 886% since last year – http://bit.ly/d2uggI
  • Google’s [huge] ambition: Eric Schmidt said to the The Wall Street Journal that Google are expecting to earn at least $10 billion per year just without the Android but Schmidt didn’t say how much they are making right now: “If we have a billion people using Android, you think we can’t make money from that?” he told the journalist – http://tinyurl.com/37h87fh

  • Market saturation in the US: A Frost & Sullivan report found that the US mobile market was now saturated with a penetration rate reaching 88%. Additionally, the number of mobile subscribers will exceed 355 million in 2014.   • 100 million Facebook accounts up for download: a 3 GB torrent is currently available online containing personal data of 100 million Facebook users (that’s to say 1/5 of Facebook’s total user base).     • We are not equal when it comes to privacy: “some suffer more of a risk from their information being made public on the Web, voluntarily or involuntarily, than others do, and are left more vulnerable to the kind of misinterpretation

Mobile statistics and reports

  • Mobile summer: A Razorfish report concluded that mobile traffic is rising during summer months, and shows no signs of slowing down. A trend confirmed by Ground Truth, research company – http://bit.ly/dsWX7J
  • Mobile gaming: 90% of mobile users download and play games on their mobiles, says a BuzzCity’s survey. And at least 29% of worldwide m-gamers are women, reaching 49% in the US and Thailand – http://bit.ly/aZYtA7
  • World cup’s effect on mobile: Opera Mini’s State of the Mobile Web said that in June on mobile, the FIFA site was the most popular across all countries, whilst in the UK the other sites in the top five were skysports.com, goal.com, eurosport.yahoo.com and livescore.comhttp://bit.ly/c3A8dD
