Android users click ads 80% more often compared to iOS

So last week I reported that iPhone makes the most from mobile phone advertising. However a report by Chitika, the on-line advertising network, has revealed that Android users click ads a lot more frequently than iOS users. According to the stats, 80% more Android users click the ads they’re presented with than those that use the iPhone. Have a gander at the numbers in the chart below:

Not Every iPhone Owner is a Super User

You would expect everyone who owns Apple’s smartphone to make use of its basic multimedia options as, after all, the explanatory videos are quite …well explanatory, wouldn’t you? It turns out that’s is not always the case, as a puzzled Ewan of Mobile Industry Review recently found out. Have a look at the anecdote: it’s clearly a common misconception that the moment a user gets given an iPhone (or a smartphone,) they gain the skills and experience required to fluently use it. There are still hours of education ahead of operators and handsets manufacturers and application developers like ourselves before we get to see a wide-range adoption of most multimedia functionalities. It’s something we continuously work on to try and improve from our side with our apps however it’s not always easy!

The State of the GeoSocial Universe [Infographic]

This neatly put together infographic highlights our social network usage against the huge adoption of mobile phones which is currently at 4.6 billion worldwide. According to the graphic, Facebook has over 500 million users with roughly one third of them accessing their accounts via mobile devices (by the way we are on Facebook too: you can look us up on http://www.facebook.com/lifeisbetteron). Other networks such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite, and Loopt, all of which are entirely dependent on mobile apps, have 100% of their users within the mobile sphere. Where do all these social platforms intersect with mobile devices, have they become ‘GeoSocial’?

Privacy Is Not A Problem For The Tech Savvy Youth

You’ve all probably read articles about young adult’s shock and dismay at being rejected from college admission or even jobs due to the photography and comments posted on their social network profiles. The frequent social media users may have learnt this the hard way but now they are more concerned about their personal information and have taken steps to monitor no matter who posts it.

Indeed – according to a survey conducted by Harris Poll in April, 85% of the millennials understand that participating in social media networks meant giving up some form of privacy. Additionally as many as 81% of them admit that their social network profiles are only a snapshot of who they really are anyway.

Why Smartphone Adoption May Not Be as Big as You Think

Following on from the earlier article on not all smartphones owners getting the most out of their products. Mashable reports forecasts that have predicted a mobile future for us, mobile web and geo-location being the next step for social media. Technology is rapidly changing and becoming more efficient and the global adoption rates for smart phones have been exponentially increasing over the past few years but the overall penetration is still low. So is the mobile web and application revolution as big as it’s hyped up to be, how come only a few of us own smartphones?

Is Motorola back with a vengeance?

Recent statistics from Appdata have shown that Motorola’s Motoblur’s Facebook application activation rate has gone through the roof (nearly 3.5 million users have activated their Motoblur account in the past 3 weeks). This is a clear sign that the Droid 2 handset is performing well since its release and quite a surprise as everyone might have forgotten about them too soon.

USA Today to remake itself to stress digital operations

USA today is a newspaper with a very fascinating history and was one of the first to bring colours and photos to the American audience. However in recent years the paper has seen a decreasing turnover partly due to the collapse of the advertising revenue. And as a direct consequence USA Today announced that it will shift from a print business model to a digital business model in the near future. It will now emphasise on breaking news on its website (the promise is that they will be published within 30 mins) as well as making more content available in digital form in an effort to win a bigger share of the tablet and mobile phone news market.

And finally don’t forget our competition to win a $40 Amazon voucher (or its equivalent) to celebrate the worldwide release of ON. What do you need to do to win? Just give us your feedback about ON via email before the 11th September and we’ll pick our favourite to win!

So good news seems to come in threes! Only last Friday we were celebrating ON’s availability for the US and in the rest of the world, launching our first-ever competition and now ON has been covered in the Guardian LG Talking Technology feature! We are, of course, delighted to be in there especially as the article is on a subject very close to the team’s heart (and broaching a subject that we’d really like to talk about at SXSW 2011): emerging mobile patterns from a user’s perspective!

The article features Richard Leggett, an interactive app developer and Tom Grinsted, interactive design manager at the Guardian’s digital agency who discuss how capabilities of the new phones have made a huge difference lately “even for those who don’t think of themselves as prolific social networkers” and how ON can help along the way.

If you want to know more then please head over to Guardian’s article for more.

Since February 2010, ON has been available in public beta to users from several countries including France and the UK. Unfortunately for some of you living in other countries you might have experienced bugs when registering with an international number. In the past few months we’ve therefore been working very hard to make sure we bring ON to the highest number of people possible.

With our release for 1.5 for Android, you can now enjoy ON fully if you’re in Taiwan, China, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Italy, Luxembourg and in the US as well! So first thing to do is to download the app here, register with an email address and make sure you read our How to join ON post!

For those of you who were already using ON, make sure you download the latest release from Android Market to discover the new implementations as we also added some cool new features:

Clicking on a contact in the application now gets you directly to the conversation screen. It’s all in there : the latest status updates, the conversation threads and all options to contact the person.

When you import your contacts (the ones from your phone, exchange, Gmail, etc.), ON only synchronises a copy of them and lets your original details where they are as they are.

ON Android release 1.5 is obviously big news and the ON team is excited to hear your feedback!

So we’re launching a nice little competition so you can tell us what you REALLY like or what you REALLY dislike about ON (we want to hear all of it!). Please get in touch via email to let us know. The team will reward the best feedback submitted by the 11th of September with an Amazon voucher worth €30 (or the equivalent in your country – that would be $40 or £25 for example) and a whole bunch of high fives.

All privacy and mobile news spotted by the ON team last week.

Google Android’s dirty little secret.

When Android was launched, Google had the great intentions in mind – freedom, openness, and good quality of software. As always with freedom comes a price and often unavoidable consequences. Remember Apple trying their very best to get AT&T to relinquish device control for their iPhone deal and all the great lengths Google had gone to get the FCC and U.S. telecoms to agree to open access rules as part of the 700MHz auction. However Android has taken most of the gains and handed the power back to the telecoms. So whatever happened to all the freedom they initially promised?

Android’s next update to be called ‘Honeycomb’?

A new rumour came up from TechRadar and their ‘multiple sources’ that confirmed the next version of Google’s Android following the 3.0 update (Gingerbread) would be called ‘Honeycomb’. Following Google’s previous naming conventions for the OS, it’s easy for one to assume that a snack starting with the letter ‘H’ would be the next update. The previous named versions are as following: 1.5 (‘Cupcake’), 1.6 (‘Donut’), 2.0/1 (‘Eclair’), 2.2 (‘Froyo’). Well, the biggest question we’ve got regarding this name is: Who’s Android’s sweet tooth?

The Blackberry Android… coming soon?

RIM’s brand new updated Blackberry 6 operating system is still miles behind its arch rivals, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. Dan Frommer of Business Insider believes the time has come for RIM to make a difficult but important move to secure their future. He thinks it’s time for them to stop wasting developing their own OS and application platform, and switch to the Android which is the only real competitor for Apple’s iOS platform. The company is still selling plenty of its iconic Blackberry devices – much thanks to new international expansion and carrier sales but it’s no longer a software leader. Potentially risking the decline into a low-end, low-margin player…

More than 100 million use Google Maps for mobile.

It’s been almost 5 years since Google launched the Google Maps for mobile application to help you get where you need to go from your phone rather than using an A-Z map. Today in 2010, more than 100 million of us use Google Maps on a monthly basis to get from A to B, find nearby places, find our way home after long nights, and more. Not good news for TomTom and Garmin!

Nokia shuts the doors to its Social Networks Beta Trial.

The Finish mobile phone manufacturer announced that they are now closing the Nokia Messaging for Social Networks beta program. Alongside this announcement, they also mentioned that the feedback forums at Nokia Beta Labs won’t be actively monitored anymore and that Nokia Messaging for Social Networks will be taken out of the list of active trials. In practice this also means all beta users will no longer have access to the service anymore.

Nokia Messaging for Social Network’s teams are now focusing on delivering a similar experience on Symbian^3 and its star new handset, the N8. Read the full story here: Nokia Messaging for Social Networks Beta trial closed.

Facebook’s iPhone app now has 102 million users.

Plus another 57 million on BlackBerry and 12 million on Android. It’s crazy how fast the smartphone market has grown in the past few years. Facebook’s recent announced that it has over 150 million active users is considerably wrong by judging the published application statistics. Each applications respective pages on Facebook reveals that iPhone app has in fact over 102.2 million monthly active users, another 57 on RIM’s Blackberry and 11.9 million on Android. Let’s not forget the 5 million or so users on the other handsets such as Palm, Sidekick and INQ. Those of you using Facebook on your iPhone will know of the new Places update. Places is a FourSquare like feature for Facebook which allows users to tag each other in places, and is already raising concerns over privacy in the US. we suggest you follow this guide and update your privacy settings.

Every year since 1987, South By South West (commonly known as SXSW) brings together a bunch of people interested in film, interactive trends and music in Austin, US.

This year, ON has the opportunity to travel to Austin and to present ON’s concept, background and story around the topic: “Emerging Mobile Patterns” and we need your votes!

If you want to send Giles Corbett and the ON team to Texas then there’s only one option: register then vote for our panel Emerging mobile patterns here

“Facebook, Twitter, Flickr… the Internet and social networks have changed the way we share things in the public space and the recent evolutions in mobiles both in terms of technical evolutions and users behaviours is bringing this to a whole new level. The way we use phones is indeed changing and making mobiles a much better, more human, more elegant, more pertinent communications platform. Many of the greatest changes in the way we communicate are now coming from the behaviours and attitudes from within the social networking space, currently the fastest growing form of communication and more importantly form of sharing. The benefits of merging presences on all channels: sms, calls, messages, IMs into threaded conversations are so great that it appears ineluctable. However bringing our social net into our mobile phones is generating a new set of challenges that raise fundamental issues around privacy, data ownership and identity.

Privacy: We share lots of content online but we want to keep some of those things secret. As we take social conversations mainstream, we need to explore interfaces that manage multiple identities for different groups of people

Personal ties: Some people are more meaningful than others: for a typical human, 4-7 people are special and one is extra-special. Sociologists call these our “strong ties”

Memory: We spend much of our lives on our mobile and all of this is moving into the social ether. But for how long?”

So remember, if you liked Giles’ presentation at TED Global 2010 and you want the ON team to go present the app at next year’s SXSW, vote for us before Friday!

The Lift Marseille 2010 theme was ‘dot.real, webify the real world‘.

Lift is a series of events built around a community of pioneers who get together in Europe and Asia to explore the social implications of new technologies. Each conference is a chance to turn innovation into opportunities by anticipating the major shifts ahead, and meet the people who drive them.

During the session focusing on ‘embracing complexity’ with my friends Stefana Broadbent and Manuel Lima, I took the stage to speak about ‘metaphors for aggregated information‘.

© - Picture by Geoffrey Dorne

As mobile ‘phones’ are moving toward an open innovation space, we see innovation accelerate very rapidly and single-purpose social applications expand while fragmenting the user experience. There is no mobile platform yet trying to integrate these single-purpose apps elegantly.

The recently launched Flipboard app for iPad is somehow heading in this direction, it’s elegantly executed but with only one metaphor (the newspaper layout pages) for all aggregated channels including FB and twitter. If we focus on mobile communication and look a bit closer at how these information relate to each other as if they were to be all navigated into one space, it appears that there are in fact not that many classes of information but the framework of metaphors to navigate them is really missing. ON is exploring this kind of navigation where all social apps fit into the framework exploration.

You can have a look at the presentation I made at Lift Marseille 2010 below:

So, the app you’ve been designing and coding for last couple of months is ready and you’ve just submitted it to the app store. ‘Job done’ you think. Unfortunately, it’s just the beginning. There’s a lot more left to do to really get it over the line.

July’s Mobile Monday London entitled “200,000 apps, Where’s mine?” posited that it was pretty easy to launch an app several years ago, when the only big app store was Apple’s, and only a few hundreds of applications were available on it.

Since then, app stores have multiplied and mobile users now find themselves dealing with a wide range of choice making it increasingly hard for developers to get users paying attention to their wares.

This month’s panel was a pretty sterling line-up even by MoMoLo standards:

Ben Scott-Robinson – Creative Director and We Love Mobile and Chairman of the panel

Chris Bourke – MD at Mobext

Dave Burrows – Director of R&D at Interchange Group

Alyssa Tisne – VP Strategic Partnerships at 7Digital

Tony Pearce – TeePee Games’s CEO

Eli Camilleri – Asssociate at Vision Mobile

Mike Kirkup – Head of developers relationships at BlackBerry

From the off, the panel were quick to remind us that the success of an app depends foremost of its quality (user interface, usefulness, experience) and not necessarily on its marketing budget after all: the better app is, the more you get recommended.

Chris from Mobext highlighted the importance of the Beta Testing phase: developers shouldn’t focus on getting the app tried by their friends, colleagues and family, but a wider and more impartial audience.

Vision Mobile’s Developer Economics 2010 report showed that only 40% of developers use peer reviewing.

Targeting

Even if developers research and target their audience before developing; they should also think about who their marketing target is. As highlighted by Eli, sometimes an app user is not necessarily the app purchaser.

Identifying user profiles is key to leading effective marketing strategies.

Some documents such as AdMob reports, Opera Mini’s State of Mobile Web or Millennial Media’s S.M.A.R.T report are regularly updated, useful tools for sourcing data and demographics.

Driving awareness around your app

Tony made came up with an interesting point: there are more than 250,000 apps (including 35,000 games) on the biggest social network in the world: Facebook, and no one can name more than 3. Except Mafia Wars and Farmville, how many others can you mention? The Facebook app world is the “Wild West”, so why should mobile apps be any different? So how can you get seen and heard in such an environment?

Being ranked in Apple’s TOP 25 applications represents lots of work and luck says Mike, and developers should target a specific niche instead of trying to target everyone.

Great – but how do you target a niche? Well, old methods are still the most effective: get in touch with influencers in the community you’re targeting, ensure you have a presence on forums etc etc…

Chris says that the best way to get known remains word of mouth: make some noise around your app and cause some trouble, people will download it, try it and recommend to their friends.

Sponsorship model

7 Digital’s Alyssa put forward the idea of implementing a partnership and sponsorship model in order to reach a specific target, taking the example of 7 Digital’s partnership with Shazam and Last.fm to get in order to get in touch with communities of music lovers.

Integrated communications

Another trick is not to forget traditional media as well as offline marketing. Eli mentioned the Royal Society of Arts iPhone app example: the app was pushed at the entrance by ticket sellers.

As Helen highlights on her blog, speaking opportunities during conferences and industry related events are the best way to get some visibility from early adopters.

Social application stores

Online app stores such as Androlib and Appolicious are the social version of mobile app stores, enabling app users to share apps with their friends and get in touch with people using the same profile as them. Those websites can also be a tool for developers to identify trends and benchmark their work. Get your app in there and follow the reviews, get in touch with your users and take into account their remarks.

It’s obvious, but don’t forget to get in touch with app review blogs, and if the criticisms are negative, do not hesitate to respond and to justify yourself.

As the panel said, it’s really hard to cover this hot topic in one hour but below you’ll find some links about application marketing:

The best mobile and privacy news brought to you by the ON team.

Mobile industry news

Another mobile app store: really? While there are already more than 80 available or soon-to-be launched app stores in the mobile world, Dell announced that they are going to launch their own app store, the Dell Mobile App Store.
Let’s remember that Dell isn’t selling any mobile devices, but has a Tablet PC in the pipelines. How many months/years will it take before Dell closes it down?
Indeed, the competition is tough, really tough… The first independent application store – GetJar – had to raise $11 million at the end of June – http://bit.ly/drQBJE

Android keeps innovating: Google held a press conference last week introducing Voice Actions for Android. This bunch of speaking commands will enable Google phone’s users to manage their whole device only with their voice like sending a text, listening to a track, using a map…
Google also highlighted that 25% of searches are already made by voice on Android.
Sounds awesome isn’t it? Have a look at the video below to find more. To try it out you’ll need to have Android 2.2 (Froyo) or to buy a Motorola’s Droid 2 if you’re based in the US – http://bit.ly/duMEA5

Smartphone market growth… Digitmes published figures that give an interesting perspective on how the smartphone market is growing: smartphone shipments for 2010 will surpass 280 million units (+57% compared to 2009). Android will be the most popular device, thanks to Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung’s Android handsets. However Symbian will still be the leader of the market.

This study’s conclusions meet Gartner study’s ones that we mentioned in the mash-up #11 last week - http://bit.ly/99uC8D

Are iPads suspected of being vampires: A recent study showed that 25% of UK iPads never see the sunlight, as only 16% of iPad owners regularly take out their tablet – http://bit.ly/94tHTW

The Future of Mobile: Google’s Android developer advocate Reto Meier published his theories about where mobile interfaces are heading, with four major –maybe a tad over optimistic- predictions:

5 years from now, we’ll have the first widely-available flexible displays and built in HD projectors

10 years from now, transparent LCD patches that can be applied to regular glasses will be available.

10 years from now, full virtual keyboards and voice input eliminate physical keyboards entirely.

20 years from now, we’ll have contact lenses that project a visual feed directly onto your retina.

20 years, from now, we’ll interface with computers through mind control.Read the full story on Technology Review: http://bit.ly/9tAiie. And for fun, that’s how AT&T saw the future in 1993. Old school but pretty dead-on!

Privacy

Eric Schmidt’s tips: Google’s CEO shared his tips for people who don’t want to appear on Google’s search results: Change your identity. A bit radical in our opinion. Maybe that’s the only solution to Google’s evil plan unveiled by Jessica Vascellaro last week – http://bit.ly/dtomdF

Hey everyone, just a quick note to let you know that we’ve just updated ON’s web interface. 4. Once you have filled in the credentials, click on Allow when you are asked “Allow ON access?” (On will never have access to your personal information’s such as your password)

General improvements:

Here are the latest summer mobile industry news!

Mobile Industry News

State of the Mobile industry: According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors sold 118.3 million units in the first half of 2010: a 54% growth compared to 2009. Android had the highest year-on-year growth rates, RIM and Nokia (in spite of being the leader) the lowest – http://bit.ly/dax5HB

Android does (very) well: Eric Schmidt announced last week that 200,000 Android phones were sold every day worldwide. That’s a sharp upturn when compared to the 160,000 Android phones sold every day announced at the end of June, and to the 100,000 announced during Google’s IO in May – http://bit.ly/b7hize

But Symbian does better: According to Canalys, 300,000 Symbian phones are sold every day, that’s to say 50% more than Android. Nevertheless, we can assume that most of those phones are not smartphones and that sales are driven by emerging countries – http://bit.ly/8ZLzlO

Two weeks ago, Canalys highlighted that Nokia is leading the smartphone market with a 38% share

Joanna Stern from Engadget had a really interesting chat with Niklas Savander, Nokia’s VP, about the future of the Finish manufacturer: definitely worth a read – http://bit.ly/ap9HMZ

FaceTime with 3G: 9to5mac folks quickly compared Facetime against 3G connection and the conclusions are not good for the “not-that-unlimited” data plans: it’s about 3MB per minute – http://bit.ly/c5bWny

Mobile payment is coming: The Wall Street Journal unveiled that Jack Dorsey’s mobile payment solution – Square – should be available at the end of summer – http://bit.ly/c3kbRb

And PayPal launched its new Android app – http://bit.ly/b4d0Kw

AntennaGate’s chief cut: Mark Papermaster, head of the iPod and iPhone hardware engineering team, is reported to have left Apple (only 18 months after being hired) following the antenna problems on the iPhone 4 – http://cnt.to/m5q

Mobile navigation: GPS manufacturer Garmin said that their mobile apps generated $27 million in Q2 of 2010. Will it be enough to stave off the Google Map tsunami? – http://bit.ly/aIScFh

Privacy

Google’s evil plan for privacy: The Wall Street Journal published a confidential Google’s brainstorming document showing how the giant wants to make the most of the data he’s got. Have a look here: http://bit.ly/cn6Hxo

Jessica Vascellaro talks to Simon Constable about the big privacy issue facing Google — how far should it go in profiting from its crown jewels-the vast trove of data it possesses about people’s activities?
